Why chocolate lingers: the 17-hour half-life
People clear theobromine in a few hours. Dogs take far longer: the Merck Veterinary Manual gives a half-life of about 17.5 hours. That is why a dog can still be restless and thirsty the day after a chocolate raid, and why vets sometimes give repeated doses of activated charcoal. Signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs
- Early (2–12 h): vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and urination, panting, restlessness.
- Moderate: hyperactivity, racing heart, high temperature, muscle twitching.
- Severe: tremors, seizures, irregular heart rhythm, collapse.
What the vet may do
If your dog ate chocolate within the last couple of hours, a vet can safely make them vomit and may give activated charcoal. Later, treatment is supportive: fluids, heart monitoring and medicines for tremors. Do not try to induce vomiting at home unless a vet or poison line tells you to; hydrogen peroxide can burn the stomach.

How much chocolate can kill a dog?
Deaths are reported mainly above about 60 mg/kg of theobromine plus caffeine, though severe signs can start lower. For a 20 lb (9 kg) dog that is roughly 7.8 oz of milk chocolate, 2.2 oz of 70–85% dark chocolate or 1.1 oz of unsweetened baking chocolate. Small dogs and dark chocolate are the dangerous combination.
My dog ate chocolate but seems fine. Should I still call?
Yes. Signs often take 6–12 hours to appear, and treatment to remove chocolate from the stomach works best in the first 1–2 hours. Call your vet or a pet poison line with your dog's weight and the amount eaten.
Is one M&M or chocolate chip dangerous?
For most dogs a single milk chocolate candy is far below the toxic level. It is dark and baking chocolate, cocoa powder and large amounts that matter. Check the wrapper for xylitol or raisins too.
