How "mg per kg" dosing works
This calculator turns that range into tablets and millilitres for your dog. It is a reference, not a prescription: call your vet before the first dose, especially for puppies, seniors or dogs on other medicines.

Warnings before giving Benadryl
- Use plain diphenhydramine only. "Benadryl-D" and "Allergy Plus Sinus/Congestion" contain phenylephrine, which is dangerous for dogs.
- Check liquid and melt-away labels for xylitol (sometimes listed as birch sugar); xylitol is toxic to dogs.
- Common side effects: sleepiness, dry mouth, urine retention. Some dogs become hyper or agitated instead.
- Signs of overdose include a racing heart, dilated pupils, agitation, tremors or seizures. Call a poison line or vet straight away.

How much Benadryl can I give my dog?
The published veterinary range is 2–4 mg/kg (about 1 mg per lb) every 8–12 hours. A 25 lb dog is about 11.3 kg, so the range is roughly 23–45 mg: one 25 mg tablet sits at the low end. Confirm the dose with your vet before giving it.
How long does Benadryl take to work in dogs?
Oral diphenhydramine usually starts working within about 30–60 minutes. If swelling is spreading or your dog is struggling to breathe, do not wait for it to work: go to an emergency vet.
Can I give my dog Benadryl every day?
Some vets use it daily for a short period during allergy flares, but long-term itch control usually works better with vet-prescribed allergy medicines. Ask your vet before giving it for more than a few days.
Is Benadryl safe for puppies?
Puppies are more sensitive to medicines and easy to overdose because they are small. Do not give Benadryl to a puppy without speaking to your vet first.
