How This Calculator Works▼
Why Xylitol is So Dangerous: In dogs, xylitol causes a massive insulin release, leading to severe hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) within 15-30 minutes. At higher doses, it causes acute liver failure within 12-24 hours. Both conditions are life-threatening.
Toxicity Thresholds:
- Hypoglycemia: 0.1 g/kg or more (1 piece of gum can poison a 10 lb dog)
- Liver Failure: 0.5 g/kg or more (5x more dangerous)
What We Calculate: This tool estimates xylitol content based on typical product formulations and calculates the dose per kilogram of body weight. We compare this to known toxic thresholds to determine risk level.
Treatment Window: If ingestion occurred within the last 1-2 hours, vomiting may be induced to prevent absorption. IV dextrose is given to counter hypoglycemia. Liver protectants may be needed for high doses. Every minute counts.
Product Variations: Xylitol content varies widely between brands. Always check the product label when possible. "Sugar-free" products may contain xylitol, erythritol (safe), or other sweeteners.
