How This Calculator Works▼
Why These Medications Are Dangerous: Dogs metabolize drugs differently than humans. Their bodies cannot safely process ibuprofen or acetaminophen at human doses.
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin):
- Mild toxicity: 50-100 mg/kg - stomach upset, vomiting
- Moderate toxicity: 100-200 mg/kg - GI bleeding, ulcers
- Severe toxicity: 200+ mg/kg - kidney failure, seizures
Acetaminophen (Tylenol):
- Toxic dose: 100-150 mg/kg
- Severe toxicity: 200+ mg/kg
- Causes liver failure and methemoglobinemia (red blood cell damage)
What We Calculate: This tool calculates the dose in mg/kg of body weight and compares it to known toxic thresholds. We provide guidance based on veterinary toxicology data.
Treatment Window: If ingestion occurred within the last 1-2 hours, your vet may induce vomiting or administer activated charcoal. IV fluids and medications to protect the stomach, kidneys, and liver may be needed. Time is critical.
