How This Calculator Works▼
The Mystery of Grape Toxicity: Grapes and raisins can cause acute kidney failure in dogs, but the toxic substance remains unknown. Not all dogs are affected equally—some dogs can eat grapes without issue, while others develop severe kidney failure from just a few grapes.
Toxicity Threshold: Based on veterinary data, the toxic dose is estimated at 0.5-3 g/kg of body weight. However, because individual sensitivity varies so much, ANY amount should be treated as potentially dangerous.
What We Calculate: This tool calculates the dose per kilogram of body weight and compares it to known toxic thresholds. Our risk assessment assumes worst-case sensitivity to err on the side of caution.
Treatment Window: If ingestion occurred within the last 2 hours, your vet may induce vomiting to prevent absorption. After 2 hours, treatment focuses on supporting kidney function with IV fluids and monitoring.
Why Raisins Are Worse: Raisins are more concentrated than grapes (water has been removed), so the toxic substance is more concentrated per gram.
